Launching Kanafani's Palestinian Resistance Literature Under Occupation
Wednesday, October 21 · 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM · Upper West Side
An evening centered on Ghassan Kanafani's landmark essay on Palestinian resistance literature, newly translated into English for the first time. The conversation explores how Palestinian writers undertook a cultural struggle to protect their language, heritage, and identity in the decades following the Nakba and the 1967 occupation.
Rashid Khalidi, the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University, leads a conversation with Ibtisam Azem and Bashir Abu-Manneh. Khalidi is one of the foremost scholars of Palestinian history and politics; Azem and Abu-Manneh bring their own expertise to a discussion of Kanafani's analysis of life under occupation and its continued relevance to Palestinian liberation struggles today. The translation itself is by Tarif Khalidi, one of the greatest living translators from Arabic to English.
This is a free, in-person event co-hosted by the Institute for Palestine Studies and the church. Expect a serious, engaged room — the kind of evening where you come to listen and think, not to be entertained. Two hours, no tickets required.
