Who we are
menna is a community app for the SWANA (Southwest Asian and North African) diaspora in New York City. We help members meet each other at small, in-person gatherings hosted by other community members.
menna is operated by MENNA LLC, a New York limited liability company. References to "menna," "we," "us," or "our" mean MENNA LLC. References to "you" mean the person using the app.
If you have questions about this policy, email hello@itsmenna.com.
What this policy covers
This policy describes what personal information menna collects, why we collect it, how we use it, and the choices you have. It applies to your use of the menna mobile app and the itsmenna.com website.
It does not cover anything that happens at an in-person meetup. What you share in person is between you and the people who are there.
Information you give us
When you sign up and use menna, you provide:
- Account details — email address, password (stored only as a salted hash; we never see your password in plain text).
- Profile details — first and last name (or chosen display name), profile photo, a short bio, your self-reported age range (18–24, 25–34, 35–44, 45–54, 55+), an optional neighborhood (e.g. "Bushwick"), the SWANA countries you identify with, and up to three SWANA artists you love.
- Meetup content — meetups you host (title, description, neighborhood, venue name and address, capacity, date, photo), notes attached to your join requests, and notes attached to a cancellation.
- Direct contact — messages you send us at any menna email address.
The minimum required to use the social features of menna (host or join a meetup) is your name, profile photo, bio, age range, and at least one favorite artist. Everything else is optional.
Information we collect automatically
- Push notification tokens — when you grant push permission, your device generates an anonymous token that we store so we can send you a notification (e.g. a host accepted your request). The token does not contain your phone number, email, or any other identifier.
- Diagnostic logs — basic crash and performance logs from the app. These contain technical fields (device model, OS version, app version, error messages) and may include the user ID of the affected account so we can reproduce a bug. We do not log message contents or meetup contents.
We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. We do not track you across other apps or websites.
How we use your information
We use what you give us to:
- Run your account (sign you in, save your profile, let you reset your password).
- Show your profile to other members so hosts can decide whether to accept your join request and guests can see who else is going.
- Run the meetup features (publish your meetups, accept and notify on join requests, deliver host/guest notes, support host and guest cancellations).
- Send push notifications about meetup activity (only the events you opt into through the app).
- Diagnose bugs, prevent abuse, and respond to your support requests.
- Comply with legal obligations.
We do not use your information to advertise to you, and we do not sell or rent your information to anyone.
How information is shared
- With other members — your profile (name, photo, bio, age range, neighborhood if you provided it, SWANA countries, favorite artists) is visible to any signed-in menna user. Your join requests and the notes attached to them are visible to the meetup host. Once a host accepts you, your profile becomes visible alongside the other accepted guests.
- With the host of a meetup — when you request to join, the host sees your profile and your application note. Once they accept you, you see the venue name and address.
-
With service providers — we use the following companies to operate
menna. They process your information on our behalf and only to deliver their service:
- Supabase, Inc. — database, authentication, file storage (your profile photo and any meetup photos), and serverless functions. supabase.com/privacy
- Expo / Expo Application Services (650 Industries, Inc.) — push notification delivery. expo.dev/privacy
- For legal reasons — if required by valid legal process or to protect the rights, safety, or property of menna, our members, or the public.
We do not use a payment processor because menna is free.
What we don't collect
To be explicit, menna does not collect:
- Payment information (no subscriptions, no in-app purchases).
- Precise location (we only store the neighborhood you typed in).
- Contacts or address book.
- Camera or microphone access (the avatar picker uses photo library only).
- Health, biometric, financial, or government ID data.
Your choices and rights
- View and edit your profile — Profile → Edit Profile, anytime.
- Block another member — Profile → Blocked Users. Blocked members can't see your profile or apply to your meetups, and you won't see theirs.
- Turn off push notifications — iOS Settings → menna → Notifications.
- Download your data — email hello@itsmenna.com and we'll send you a copy within 30 days.
- Delete your account — Profile → Delete Account in the app. This deletes your profile, your meetups, your join requests, your blocks, and your push tokens. We keep encrypted backups for up to 30 days after deletion in case of a system failure, after which the data is purged.
If you're in California, the EU, the UK, or another jurisdiction with specific privacy rights (CCPA, GDPR, etc.), those rights apply and you can exercise them by emailing hello@itsmenna.com.
Age requirement
menna is for adults 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has signed up, email hello@itsmenna.com and we will close the account.
Data security
We use industry-standard security: passwords stored as salted hashes, all data in transit encrypted with TLS, access to the production database restricted to a small set of authorized employees with audit logging. No system is perfectly secure; if we ever experience a breach that affects you, we will notify you as required by law.
Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete your data within 30 days. Diagnostic logs are kept for up to 90 days. Aggregate, non-identifying statistics (e.g. total number of meetups in a given month) may be kept indefinitely.
Changes to this policy
If we make a material change to this policy, we will notify you in the app and by email at least 30 days before the change takes effect. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the most recent change.
