A documentary essay on radicalization and landscape — Éric Baudelaire's methodical investigation into how geography shapes ideology. The film follows a young man called "Aziz" through the places that defined him: the Paris suburbs where he grew up, schools and workplaces, and finally Syria, where he joined Al-Nusra Front in 2012. Drawing on real court documents and surveillance recordings, Baudelaire weaves one person's path into the larger systems that enabled it.
This is Baudelaire's fourth feature and marks his first collaboration with editor Claire Atherton, who cut Chantal Akerman's *Sud* — a film that also used landscape to examine human capacity for violence. The two sensibilities fuse into something powerful: Baudelaire's research-based rigor meets Atherton's fluid approach to cinematic time. The project sparked what became Atherton's most prolific working relationship in the post-Akerman years; she and Baudelaire continue collaborating today.
Screening as part of MoMA's "The Craft: Claire Atherton" retrospective. 102 minutes, in French with English subtitles. DCP.
