One in a Million

Filmed over a decade, One in a Million is an intimate portrait of Israa's journey from Syria to Germany and back — a coming-of-age story told across borders and displacement. Co-directors Itab Azzam and Jack MacInnes follow her from age 11 as she and her family cross the Aegean Sea in search of safety, then navigate adolescence, identity, and belonging in a new country far from home.

What emerges is a deeply personal chronicle of war, exile, and the collision between new freedoms and the pull of Syrian tradition. The film asks a universal question: what does it mean to call a place home? It's the kind of documentary that trusts its subjects completely — you feel the filmmakers' presence only in their restraint.

Screenings run October 21–29 at IFC Center in Greenwich Village. The film is in Arabic and German, 105 minutes, DCP. Showtimes and tickets are coming soon — check back on the Cinema Arabiyya calendar or IFC's site for the full schedule.
