Jacques Schwarz-Bart Trio: Resistance

A concert celebrating resistance through music and collective expression. Jacques Schwarz-Bart, voted 2025 Best Saxophone Player in France, brings his new trio album *Resistance* to La Maison Française — a musical response to the times we live in, transforming anxiety into serenity through improvisation and radical expression.

Schwarz-Bart was born in Guadeloupe and is now based in Boston, where he teaches at Berklee College of Music. His lineage of resistance runs deep: his father, André Schwarz-Bart, was the youngest member of the French Resistance, while his mother, Simone, co-authored *La Mulâtresse Solitude*, a novel centered on a historic figure of resistance to slavery in Guadeloupe. That legacy — resistance to fascism and colonial oppression — informs everything he does. He's collaborated with Roy Hargrove, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, and others, and is a pioneer of gwoka jazz and voodoo jazz, drawing constantly on Afro-Caribbean traditions and collective memory.

He performs here with Or Bareket on bass and Samuel Bolduc on drums. Bareket, born in Jerusalem to parents of Moroccan and Iraqi descent, was raised between Buenos Aires and Tel Aviv and has been based in Brooklyn since 2011. He weaves North African, Iraqi, and Latin American traditions together with Black American music. Bolduc is a New York-based jazz drummer from Quebec, trained at Berklee, known for his infectious pocket and crystalline cymbal touch.

For *Resistance*, the trio deliberately omits piano and guitar, creating open space for improvisation and exploration. La Maison Française is an intimate venue on Washington Mews in Greenwich Village. This is a free event — RSVP through Eventbrite.
