Introduction to Nastaliq Calligraphy
Saturday, October 31 · 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM · Chelsea
An introduction to Nastaliq, one of the most prominent and fluid calligraphic styles used for writing the Perso-Arabic script. This is a hands-on workshop where you'll learn directly from a master.
Bahman Panahi is a Franco-Iranian artist, calligrapher, and musician with a Ph.D. in music and musicology from the Sorbonne. He was instructed by great Iranian masters and has spent decades developing what he calls "Musicalligraphy" — a conceptual practice that weaves together the rhythm and gesture of calligraphy with musical principles. His work has been exhibited and performed internationally, and he continues to teach calligraphy workshops around the world. The workshop is presented in partnership with NY-based calligrapher Asad Husain.
The Reed Society for the Sacred Arts curates programs around sacred art forms — Arabic and Ottoman calligraphy, Islamic illumination, sacred geometry, and traditional music like Qawwali. They work with diaspora communities, immigrants, and refugees seeking to engage with their heritage. The workshop runs 3.5 hours and is open to ages 15+. It's in-person at their Chelsea location. Refunds available up to 7 days before the event.
