Raï in the Pocket: Algerian Grooves and Rhythms
Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · 7:00 PM · Fort Greene
A hands-on workshop in Algerian Raï percussion led by one of Algeria's leading drummers. Rabah Hadjal will guide participants through the rhythms, techniques, and grooves that define Raï music, working with derbouka, bendir, guellal, congas, and tambourine. No experience necessary — bring your own drum if you have one, or work with what's provided.
Rabah Hadjal is an Algerian percussionist from Algiers with over 20 years behind the instrument and a decade as a professional. He's played Coke Studio Algeria, toured alongside major Algerian artists including Cheb Mami, and built a reputation as a trusted session drummer on national TV. He now tours internationally with El Dey and serves as the leading drummer for Mouh Milano, one of the most-viewed Arabic artists globally. He brings both technical mastery and the lived experience of Algeria's music scene to this workshop.
Expect to learn by doing — demonstrations followed by group playing, so you'll leave with actual rhythms under your hands, not just theory. The Brooklyn Music School is a working music space in Fort Greene. The workshop runs 7 to 8:30 PM.
