Laura Poitras's documentary portrait of life under US occupation in Iraq, centered on Dr. Riyadh al-Adhadh, a Sunni medical doctor and political candidate navigating the impossible terrain between his commitment to democracy and the daily violence consuming his country. Shot over eight months, the film moves between his clinic waiting room—where patients arrive with wounds both physical and psychological—and his political organizing, as he argues for Sunni participation in the 2005 elections. It's a film about conviction in the face of chaos.

Poitras (Citizenfour, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed) has a gift for intimate documentary—the kind that lets you sit in a room with someone and understand their world without narration or editorializing. My Country, My Country earned an Academy Award nomination and remains one of the most direct, human-scale accounts of the Iraq War's impact on ordinary Iraqis.
