NYC, So excited to welcome ZEM @brookegizem for the first time at Laylit On July 25 at @elsewherespace ! Find her in the loft where she will be spinning a very special set of Turkish and global psychedelic rock music from the 70s and 80s as well as more contemporary offerings. 🎧Bio 🎧 ZEM gravitates toward global sounds, shaped by a childhood spent in Istanbul, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Berlin. At a young age, she was inspired by her mom’s extensive vinyl collection of ’70s and ’80s R&B, soul, funk, rock, and multiple Sade albums. Today, she is rediscovering her dad’s Turkish heritage through Turkish folk and psychedelic rock. Growing up across four different countries exposed her to global deep house, jungle, Berlin techno, Ethiopian jazz, Afrobeats, Amapiano, Arab funk and disco, and Turkish psychedelic rock, shaping the way she experiences sound and its intricate layers. Through music and research, she hopes to reconnect with the places she has lived while blending in her own identity and creating stories throughout her sets. Beyond DJing, ZEM’s creative practice extends to embroidery, charcoal drawing, painting, playing the oud, graphic design, capoeira, and photography.
